Paul M Grist began a 45-year career at the Selma YMCA in Alabama as a physical director. He was a driving force in the creation of the Blue Ridge Leaders’ School (BRLS) and served as its director in the 1930s. Eventually becoming a general secretary for the Alabama YMCA until his retirement in 1964, Grist was known for his work with youth and his service to his community. He was especially known for his candor and for his devotion to the youth he taught and coached. He focused on teaching youth how to be accountable, show responsibility, and strive for excellence in both their athletic pursuits and their lives. He stayed active in the YMCA community and in BRLS even after his retirement, including leading morning devotions during the summer session. In 1969, speaking of both BRLS and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) conferences, Grist is quoted by The Selma Times Journal as saying, “The Blue Ridge Assembly is performing a great service to our nation’s youth.”
The Paul M. Grist Award is presented to those who model Grist’s example of deep Christian faith and concern for others. The good work that began with Grist is carried out by those inspired by his example, most notably those honored by receiving the award in his name. During the summer conferences for Blue Ridge Leaders’ School (BRLS), Christian Values Conference (CVC), Conference on National Affairs (CONA), and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), youth may sit in the Heaton Hall meeting rooms to meet together, share ideas, and learn from their leaders. Imagine them, reading about Grist’s work and choosing to walk in his footsteps.
All Grist Award winners will be contacted and given the opportunity to make this room a reality! Since there is already a list of all Grist Award winners in the main dining room, only those who donate to the renovation will be listed on signage within the renovated space. Each conference (BRLS, CVC, CONA, & FCA) has a $15,000 goal to help reach our overall $60,000 goal. Â
