Consider Tax Law Changes When You Donate

Tax changes in 2026 could impact the tax advantages to your giving strategy. No matter how the laws change, your generosity fuels lasting impact. Thank you for continuing to support causes that matter most to you! The following information is provided for informational purposes only; we encourage you to consult your own tax advisor about how these may apply to your personal tax situation.

New floor for itemizers
2026 itemizers will only be able to claim a charitable deduction for donations greater than .5% of their AGI
What it means for you: Consider giving more in 2025

New limit for top earners
Tax benefit in the highest tax bracket decreases from 37% to 35%
What it means for you: If you are in the highest tax bracket maximize your giving in 2025

Increased State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction
Deduction limit increases from $10,000 to $40,000
What it means for you: If you live in a high tax state, itemizing may be a better option

Standard Deduction Increase:
The standard deduction was slightly increased and made the permanent basis for figuring inflation adjustments. Those 65 and older may qualify for a bonus deduction.
What it means for you: Carefully consider each year whether itemizing or the standard deduction provides the most benefit

Coming in 2026!
Non-itemizers will be able to claim a donation up to $1500 (single) or $2000 (married). So beginning next year, you will be able to get credit for your donation even if you take the standard deduction!

Year-End Gift Ideas

  • Make a gift from your IRA – If you are 70 1/2 or older, you can give a qualified charitable distribution up to $108,000 directly from your IRA. This counts for your required minimum distribution and you will not pay income taxes on the transfer.
  • Give a stock gift – Donating appreciated stock that you have owned for longer than one year could have a tax benefit
  • Give from your DAF – Recommend a grant be given to YMCA Blue Ridge from your donor advised fund
  • Give a gift by check or online – your gift in 2025 makes an immediate impact toward the restoration of YMCA Blue Ridge and increases the impact we will have in 2026. Donate today!
